Business And Life Experience
I started out as a farmer, but for the last 30 plus years I have been in business and more recently Commercial Real Estate and currently CEO for Wai Ora Christian Community Trust

At the age of 19 I was out contract scrub cutting, yep swinging a slasher.

At the age of 21 I set up and operated my own disco to supplement the scrub cutting income. I had graduated to a scrub-saw & chain saw by then.

At  24, I set up a pie cart, & ran it during the summer at Whitianga wharf.

At  25, my brother Peter & I bought into dads farm.
While on the farm I, worked with sheep, goats, pigs, dry stock and milking cows. Tractor & bulldozer contracting.
Farming was tough and I had to continually find things to subsidise the farm income.

In my 30's I started a carpet and upholstery cleaning business, where I learnt how to lay carpet & vinyl.
At 34 I sold the pie cart and the disco and I bought a retail shop. I was now in the rag trade.

At 36 I sold the carpet & upholstery business and opened a second shop in Thames and added sewing machines, curtains & blinds (yes I had to learn to sew).

The shop in Whitianga was sold in 1992 and the shop in Thames was sold in 2001.I must add I couldn’t have done all this with out the help of a good wife.

In 2002 I bought a franchise marketing business selling all manner of products to the franchise members under contract. This included residential and commercial property under contract for clients all over the country.
From Coopers beach in the far North to Riverton in the Deep South. Never been to Riverton but through the modern miracle of computers & the internet distance is no problem.

I had to walk away from that franchise when the IRD made the master franchises bankrupt.
I tried to sue the master franchisee but by the time the IRD had finished there wasn’t much left for this Mäori boy.

I did an 18 month stint with Keith Hay Homes, which was great because it filled a few blanks on the technical side of the building industry including the importance of quantity surveying, budgeting & planning.
Skills that have come in handy with my own investment property.

While much of the Port Nicholson Block Settlement was to redress cultural issues the greater part of the settlement is commercial property.

As a commercial real estate agent I spend all day working on commercial property specialising in sales, leasing.
As a member of the PNBS trust I believe I have skills that will be very useful to the trust with existing property & negotiation future investments.

Life skills
In amongst my business and lifes adventures I also.

Ran the Whitianga badminton club.

Was an active member of the Mercury Bay Rugby Club.

Was an active member of the JCs Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Served as a voted member of the Mercury Bay Community Council for three years.

Voted on to the Mercury Bay Area School Board Of Trustees during the transition to tomorrows schools.

Was youth leader/pastor at Whitianga Baptist Church for about three years and then Thames Baptist Church for further three years. (Shortly after having to pull out of the leadership of the Thames Baptist Youth due to political correctness I was talking to a Police Officer who happen to mention that while I was running the youth group the crime rate in Thames halved. Not sure if the comment was accurate or not but either way, one up to making and enforcing the rules).

Served as chairman of the Thames youth centre prior to moving to Wellington

I was also lighting & sound engineer for the Thames Civic Ctr for 4 years
