The Wai Ora Christian Community Trust has provided a programme of alternative education since 1996. In recent years there has been a move towards a more formal relationship between the Ministry of Education and the providers of Alternative education and the result has seen a more targeted approach towards quality programme development and delivery, and the professional development of staff.

Te Akomanga - Alternative Education
Wai Ora currently provide an alternative education programme for 15 youth who are not enrolled in formal education or who have been excluded from school through truancy or non attendance.

The programme is contracted by the Ministry of Education through Wanganui High School who manage alternative education in Wanganui. Te Akomanga alternative education is staffed by one full time tutor plus two part time support workers and a part time social worker.

Students are also supported by our Training and Education Officer who oversights the programme development and delivery. The aims of Te Akomanga is to work with each  student to improve their numeracy and literacy
skills and to explore and chart their individual career pathways with goal of integrating
pathways with goal of integrating students back into mainstream education or on to tertiary  courses.
