Houora Whanau - Aramoho Garden The Story So Far
In March 2009 Wai Ora hosted a Community HeaIth day which was organised by the HEHA Community Action Group lead by Anne Kauika. They engaged with other community groups who came and demonstrated their skills and promoted their or- ganisations services and programmes. Those involved were Sustainable Whanganui, Transition Towns, Te Oranganui lwi HeaIth, Kohanga Reo, Aramoho Kindergarten, Tawhero School Kapa Haka and Whanganul Karaoke Club. There were demonstrations on building raised gardens, making compost, how to build an earth oven, seed raising, as well as free native plants courtesy of Kaitoke Prison Nursery and free fruit trees from the Whanganui Regional PHO.
The hosting of this community day inspired the staff and students to give serious consideration to adopting the principals of HEHA-healthy eating and healthy action and as a result we continued to plant and harvest our own vegetables and fruit from the raised gardens. At this time we were also supporting the Aramoho Community Garden which had been established at Te Mana Park. While the garden there had suffered as a result of vandalism it was still supported by the community although a number of other issues had surfaced and these related to security against vandalism and the lack of a public toilet facility.
