Wai Ora Christian Community Trust began it's foray into training and education through developing a life skills programme for Rangatahi who were not enrolled at school or who were habitually absent from school.
It encompassed some basic reading, writing and numeracy skills along with life-skills training. This programme was the fore-runner to the current "Alternative Education" programme.
When Wai Ora became registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority in 1995 it allowed us to look closely at the needs of our community for different types of training. Our focus on Youth and their families led us to develop a course for 15 to 18 year old youth who were not at school or employed.
The course focussed on firstly dealing with a lot of the barriers to employment that our Rangatahi had. These included, drug, alcohol and substance abuse, violence or homelessness and many others.
We also offered a short-term motivational course for Work and Income clients who were deemed to be at risk of becoming long-term unemployed. Following on the heals of this was the development of a Retail Skills programme in response to the industries need for trained staff. This programme was for adults aged 18 or over.
The programmes that Wai Ora offer will vary from time to time depending upon the need of the market and the demand from the people in our community.
Wai Ora will continue to review our existing programmes, develop new programmes and diversify as society changes.
This course has been designed to help students discover what type of career they might want and to help them develop a pathway towards achieving it.
The course in an NZQA
acredited course.
Te Akomanga is an alternative education programme for 16 year old youth who are not enrolled in formal education or who have been excluded from school through truancy or non attendance.
